Markdown to Word

Markdown is readable as plain text, but Word shows the raw **, # and | characters unless the Markdown is converted first. RichMarkdown reads Markdown and copies it as formatted text, so headings, bold, lists, tables and code arrive in Word as real formatting.

In short

Steps

  1. Open the RichMarkdown editor, click Open file… and choose your .md file, or drag it onto the page. To paste instead, click New and press Ctrl + V on Markdown text.
  2. Check the page. Headings, lists, tables and code blocks are shown formatted. Make any edits here.
  3. Click the ▾ beside Export .md and choose Copy for Word / Google Docs.
  4. In Word, press Ctrl + V. For plain text with no formatting, use Paste Special → Unformatted text instead.

FAQ

Can I convert a .md file to a .docx file?

Not yet as a file. You can copy the formatted text and paste it into a new Word document, which is what most people need. A .docx download is planned.

Will the Word document keep my headings?

Yes. Markdown headings are copied as heading styles, so Word’s navigation pane and table of contents can use them.

Are my files uploaded?

No. The conversion happens in your browser and nothing is sent to a server.
